Common Conditions That Physical Therapy Treats
Mobile physical therapy is often prescribed as a treatment for a wide range of conditions. Here are some common conditions that our physical therapists treat.
Musculoskeletal and Sports Injuries
- Sprains: Stretching or tearing of ligaments, which is the fibrous tissue connecting bones and joints.
- Strains: Stretching or tearing of a muscle or a tissue connecting muscle to bone.
- Joint injuries: Degeneration or injury to the cartilage in the joints.
- Overuse-type (repetitive stress) injuries: Most often affecting the tendons in the body.
Back and Neck Pain
- Bulging and Herniated disc: A bulging disc occurs when the soft, gel-like center of an intervertebral disc (nucleus pulposus) pushes against the outer, fibrous layer (annulus fibrosus) without fully breaking through. A herniated disc, also known as a slipped or ruptured disc, happens when the nucleus pulposus breaks through the annulus fibrosus.
- Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD): This condition is characterized by the gradual wear and tear of the intervertebral discs in the spine.
- Spinal stenosis: Condition where the hole (canal) that the nerves exit the spine narrows, causing pressure on the spinal nerves. It is most common in the neck and lower back.
- Nerve Pain (i.e., sciatica or radiculopathy): Pain that radiates from the lower back or neck down one or both arms/legs along the nerve pathway.
Post-Surgical Rehabilitation
Physical therapists can help patients recover from surgery by providing exercises and techniques to restore range of motion, strength, and function.
- Total joint replacement
- Ligament repair/reconstruction
- Tendon repair
- Arthroscopy
- Spinal surgery
- Bunionectomy
Chronic pain
- Fibromyalgia: Widespread muscle pain and tenderness.
- Chronic headaches: Painful sensations that occur in the head, such as sharp pain and achiness.
- Arthritis: Our physical therapists work with you to improve your joint mobility, reduce pain, and increase your overall function and quality of life.
Have you been diagnosed with one of these conditions? If so, call Active Health Solutions at (240) 630-2248 to learn more about our treatment plans and book an in-home appointment today!
In-home Physical Therapy Treatments at Active Health Solutions
Our mobile physical therapy treatments will vary depending on your condition and needs. Firstly, we will begin rehabilitation with a comprehensive physical assessment, including reviewing current symptoms, medical history, and contributing lifestyle factors. After that, some common treatments and interventions used by our physical therapists include:
Manual Therapy
Manual therapy at Active Health Solutions includes hands-on techniques, such as:
- Therapeutic massage: A therapeutic technique that improves circulation, reduces muscle tension and pain, and promotes relaxation. Massage therapy involves the manipulation of soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia (thin layer of connective tissue that supports muscles, bones, organs, and other structures in the body)
- Joint mobilizations and manipulations: Methods used to improve joint range of motion and reduce pain and stiffness. These involve the use of manual therapy techniques to guide the joints and surrounding tissues through various movements. Mobilizations range from light to strong forces, whereas manipulation involves the use of high-velocity, low-amplitude thrusts to mobilize joints. This reduces pain, improves range of motion, and restores function.
Therapeutic Exercise
Our physical therapists design specific exercise programs to help you improve your strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance. These exercises can help patients recover from injuries, reduce pain, and prevent further injury.
Functional Training
Often you may require assistance with functional tasks, such as walking, climbing stairs, or lifting objects, to improve your ability to perform daily activities.
Modalities
In physical therapy, modalities refer to specific tools that are used to help manage pain, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation. These include:
- Electrical stimulation: Uses electrical current to stimulate nerves and muscles in order to reduce pain, promote healing, and improve muscle function.
Functional Dry Needling
Our team is trained in functional dry needling, or trigger point dry needling, a physical therapy treatment that uses thin, sterile needles to treat pain and improve movement.
Assistive Devices
Our physical therapists may recommend the use of assistive devices, such as:
- Braces/orthotics: Devices worn on the body to provide support, stability, and protection to injured or weakened joints and muscles.
- Crutches, canes, and walkers: Equipment used to provide support and assistance for individuals who have difficulty walking or standing due to an injury or disability.
Education and Advice
Our physical therapists educate you on how to manage your condition, avoid further injury, and improve your overall health and wellness. They may also provide advice on ergonomic or lifestyle changes to help prevent injury or manage chronic conditions.
Ergonomic Assessments
With the rise in technology at home and patients spending more time in their home offices, our therapists include workstation ergonomic assessments in our treatment plans.
Sleep Position
Sleep is crucial for rest and recovery. Ensuring that your body is in the most supported position while you are at rest can help you recover faster from your injury.

How long should each appointment take?
At Active Health Solutions, we believe in providing personalized care to each of our patients. During your first visit, we will conduct a thorough evaluation that typically lasts about 60 minutes to understand your specific needs and develop a tailored plan of care. Follow-up visits usually range from 45 to 60 minutes.
The number and duration of visits will depend on your individual needs. We recommend attending more frequent visits in the initial stages of therapy to ensure maximum progress, as discussed with your therapist.
As mobile physical therapists, we have the luxury of spending the full session with patients without the distractions and multiple bookings of a brick-and-mortar clinic. The focused care coupled with the emphasis we place on patient education results in fewer total visits with us for patients to achieve their functional goals.
Our post-operative patients typically start with two visits per week while our non-operative patients typically start with one visit per week. Our goal is to get you as independent as possible as soon as possible. As soon as we feel you are ready, we taper your care to one visit per two weeks until you are independent with your program and able to completely manage your health.
Our dedicated team at our Washington, DC, Northern Virginia and Maryland clinic is committed to helping you achieve your health goals and providing ongoing support throughout your journey to recovery.

Can my physical therapist diagnose me?
The definition of diagnosis means to identify or determine the cause or nature of a disease, disorder, or other medical condition. The process of diagnosis typically involves collecting information about a patient’s symptoms, medical history, and physical examination results. This information is then used to form a diagnosis, which is a medical opinion or conclusion about the nature of the condition.
During your initial session at Active Health Solutions, our physical therapist will conduct a thorough evaluation, including a detailed history and comprehensive physical examination. This assessment helps determine the severity of your injury or illness, pinpoint the source of your symptoms, and identify contributing factors.
The goal of physical therapy is to help you find relief and/or recover from your condition. Although the diagnosis is essential to this process, it is not the main focus of a physical therapy visit. For example, the diagnosis may point to the location of your symptoms. Still, it does not account for all the factors affecting it, nor does it account for how it is affecting the rest of your body. Our therapists look at the whole person to help you resolve all of your issues, not just the diagnosis.
In addition, physical therapists regularly collaborate with physicians to confirm or explore potential contradictions to a diagnosis, ensuring the accuracy of your diagnosis and the appropriateness of your treatment plan.
You can trust Active Health Solutions to guide you toward improved health and well-being. Our dedicated team of experts and our commitment to your personalized care will help you get the results you deserve!
How can I tell if I will benefit from physical therapy?
Physical therapy at Active Health Solutions can be extremely beneficial for you!
Our skilled physical therapists assess the whole person to identify all factors related to your condition. We understand the interconnectedness of the body and how a problem in one area may be the symptom pointing to the source of the problem in an entirely different location.
Once we identify the limitations you are experiencing, our patient-centered therapists will help determine the most effective way to resolve them. Whether you’re dealing with a single problem or multiple issues all at once, our specialists can help!
For some people, physical therapy is the sole solution. For others, it is part of a collaborative effort with multiple healthcare professions. Our goal is to help individuals achieve the results they deserve.

When will I start to feel better?
At Active Health Solutions, we understand that one of the most common questions we receive from patients is, “When will I start to feel better?” While there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, we want to ensure that you understand the physical therapy process and what you can expect.
Physical therapy is a comprehensive and personalized process that takes time to achieve optimal results. The timeline for recovery and pain relief varies depending on the individual, the severity of the condition, and other factors such as age and overall health.
Our expert physical therapists work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your unique needs and goals. We use various techniques, exercises, and modalities to relieve pain, restore function, and prevent future injury or pain.
It is important to understand that physical therapy is not a quick fix but a process that takes time and effort. You may start to feel some improvement in your symptoms after a few sessions, but it may take weeks or even months to achieve optimal results.
Our approach means considering not just your physical health but also your emotional and mental well-being. We understand that physical therapy can be a challenging physical and emotional process, and we are here to support you every step of the way.
If you have any concerns or questions about your treatment plan or timeline for recovery, please do not hesitate to discuss them with our physical therapists. We are here to help you achieve optimal health and wellness!
Do treatments hurt?
Physical therapy can be a powerful tool to alleviate pain and discomfort. Our Active Health Solutions therapists are dedicated to helping you understand what “normal” pain is and what isn’t. In some cases, a physical therapist’s exercises or actions may trigger a temporary pain response to facilitate your overall improvement.
It is important to understand that weakened or recuperating muscles may cause momentary discomfort when you begin exercising them. For some people, years of avoiding movement or recent surgery can cause pain when restoring range of motion. It may sound counterintuitive, but in some cases, experiencing this type of pain can reduce overall pain levels and prevent more severe pain.
Although we know that sometimes it is “normal” to have pain, our physical therapists will never intentionally inflict pain on you. In addition, we will educate you about when pain is acceptable (necessary) for your recovery and when it should be avoided.
You can also count on our Active Health Solutions therapists to do everything possible to minimize your discomfort and prevent increased pain during your physical therapy treatments. Communication is critical, and we encourage you to speak openly with our therapists to reduce any discomfort you may feel.
Ultimately, our goal is to help you find lasting pain relief to get back to your typical routines as soon as possible. We will work with you every step to prepare you for any discomfort you may experience and ensure that your physical therapy experience is as comfortable and effective as possible.
How is my progress tracked?
At Active Health Solutions, we understand that tracking your progress is an essential part of your physical therapy treatment. Our expert physical therapists use a comprehensive approach to track your progress and ensure that you achieve optimal results.
Our physical therapists use a variety of tools to track your progress, including regular assessments, measurements, and evaluations. We track changes in your range of motion, strength, and function to ensure that you are making progress toward your goals.
We also work closely with you to track your subjective experience of your treatment. We understand that your physical therapy treatment is more than just a series of exercises and techniques. It is a journey towards better health and well-being, and we want to ensure you get the most out of your experience.
Our comprehensive approach means that we take into account your entire well-being, including your physical, emotional, and mental health. We track changes in your pain levels, mood, and overall sense of well-being to ensure that your treatment plan is comprehensive and effective.
Our physical therapists at Active Health Solutions are dedicated to ensuring that you achieve optimal results and get back to doing what you love. We are committed to tracking your progress and adjusting your treatment plan as needed to ensure you reach your goals.
Whether recovering from an injury, dealing with a chronic condition, or simply looking to improve your overall health and well-being, our expert physical therapists will guide you every step of the way!
Why does physical therapy take longer than expected?
At Active Health Solutions, we understand that physical therapy can take longer than you may have initially anticipated. While it may be frustrating, it is important to understand that physical therapy is a comprehensive and individualized process that takes time to achieve optimal results.
Physical therapy takes into account not just your current condition but also your entire well-being, including your physical, emotional, and mental health. Our expert physical therapists work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your unique needs and goals.
Physical therapy is not just about treating the symptoms of your condition but also addressing the root causes of your pain or discomfort. This can take time and effort to identify and treat effectively.
Additionally, physical therapy may require ongoing exercises, stretches, or lifestyle modifications outside your physical therapy appointments. It can take time and dedication to achieve optimal results.
At Active Health Solutions, we are committed to helping you achieve your goals and get back to doing what you love. We understand that physical therapy may take longer than you initially anticipated. But you can rest assured that we are here to guide you every step of the way and ensure that you receive the best possible care to achieve optimal results. Can I continue seeing a therapist even when I feel better?

After you have finished your therapy sessions, you can continue to see our physical therapist in several different ways, for example:
- Your therapist will see your review and progress in your at-home therapy program.
- You can schedule a re-evaluation after a month to ensure you are still doing well and modify your home program as needed.
- You can arrange to see your therapist at regular intervals (i.e., every six months) for a consultation to assess your progress, ensure you are not regressing, and deal with anything new that may have started.
We can also arrange to meet you at your gym to work with you on determining what equipment and exercises would benefit your continued recovery.
If you have any questions or concerns about continuing physical therapy even when you start to feel better, please do not hesitate to discuss them with our physical therapists.
