Do I need a doctor’s referral to receive treatment?
The short answer is no!
Thanks to Direct Access, you do not need a doctor’s referral or prescription to receive treatment from a physical therapist. Direct access is the legal right that enables patients in all fifty states and the District of Columbia to access physical therapy services and programs directly.
Can I go to any physical therapy clinic I want?
Absolutely! According to “The Patient’s Bill of Rights” law, you can choose what physical therapy clinic you want for your care. While physicians may recommend a specific clinic, you are not obligated to follow their suggestions. Your fundamental patient rights protect your ability to make informed decisions about your treatment and ensure you are treated with respect and confidentiality.
The Patient’s Bill of Rights is a set of principles that outline the fundamental rights of patients within the healthcare system. It was established to protect and empower patients. It aims to ensure that individuals receive quality care, access necessary information, and are treated with respect and dignity. While specific details may vary by jurisdiction, the Patient’s Bill of Rights generally covers the following key areas:
- The right to information about quality: You have the right to access easily understandable information about the credentials of healthcare providers, the quality of healthcare facilities, and the services covered by your health plans.
- The right to choose a healthcare provider: This right grants you the freedom to select your primary healthcare provider, as well as specialists, including physical therapists, based on your preferences and needs.
- The right to emergency services: You cannot be denied necessary treatment in emergencies, regardless of your ability to pay or insurance status.
- The right to make decisions: You have the autonomy to make informed decisions about your healthcare, including the choice of treatment options and the right to accept or refuse care.
- The right to respect: Healthcare providers must treat everyone with respect, regardless of sex, age, race, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability.
- The right to confidentiality: Your health information is private and cannot be released without consent except under specific, legally mandated circumstances.
- The right to complain: Healthcare providers, insurance companies, and other entities must have a grievance procedure in place, allowing you to voice your concerns or complaints.
The Patient’s Bill of Rights is a foundation for patient-centered healthcare, promoting transparency, shared decision-making, and a respectful partnership between patients and healthcare providers.

We accept various payment methods, including cash, check, debit, and credit cards, and provide payment options based on your needs. FSAs and HSAs are accepted. How is my progress measured?
At Active Health Solutions, our skilled physical therapists are dedicated to helping you achieve optimal health and well-being through a comprehensive and personalized approach. We recognize the importance of measuring both your impairments and functional limitations to design a treatment plan that addresses your unique needs and goals.
Impairments can impact your comfort and physical abilities, including:
- Pain
- Weakness
- Loss of motion
- Paresthesias
Functional limitations, on the other hand, refer to difficulties in performing daily activities, like:
- Lying
- Sleeping
- Sitting
- Standing
- Walking
- Running
- Cycling
By tracking your impairments and functional abilities, our physical therapists can gather objective information to measure your progress and adjust your treatment plan accordingly. Your personal experiences and feedback are invaluable in this process, as they provide insights into your improvements, regressions, or stagnation.
Our ultimate goal at Active Health Solutions is to help you notice tangible improvements in your overall well-being throughout your therapy journey. Should your progress deviate from the anticipated path, our therapists will reassess your situation and make necessary adjustments or recommendations for further evaluation or treatments.
You can trust our expertise to guide you toward a healthier, more active life!
How long is each appointment going to be?
Appointment durations vary based on individual needs, but initial sessions typically last about 60 minutes. Subsequent sessions generally range from 45 to 60 minutes.
It is common for your therapist to want to see you more often in the early stages of your care to assess your progress and confirm your treatment plan. You’ll probably see your therapist once a week initially and then make your appointments more spaced out as you proceed through treatment.
Our therapists will work with you to determine the appropriate length and frequency of your appointments to ensure your optimal progress.
What should I do to prepare for my first appointment?
At Active Health Solutions, we are dedicated to ensuring our patients a smooth and hassle-free mobile experience in the Washington, DC, Northern Virginia and Maryland areas. Is Active Health Solutions a home health agency?
Home Health Agencies and at-home physical therapy services both deliver care within the familiar setting of your own home. They differ in scope, focus, and treatment approaches. Understanding these distinctions can help you decide the most suitable care option for your needs.
Home Health Agencies provide a broad range of medical and non-medical services, including skilled nursing, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and personal care assistance. Their interdisciplinary teams cater to patients with diverse health conditions, such as chronic illnesses, post-operative care, or those requiring support with activities of daily living.
On the other hand, at-home physical therapy focuses solely on rehabilitative care consistent with conditions treated in an outpatient setting, primarily restoring function, alleviating pain, and improving mobility. Our highly trained therapists at Active Health Solutions are equipped to address various conditions, including orthopedic injuries, balance and mobility issues, and post-surgical recovery. We offer tailored treatment plans to help patients regain strength, increase flexibility, and enhance overall well-being.
At-home physical therapists employ a combination of evidence-based techniques, such as manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, and modalities, to deliver effective and individualized care. Furthermore, we emphasize patient education and empowerment, ensuring our clients are actively engaged in their recovery journey, leading to lasting results and improved quality of life.
While Home Health Agencies offer comprehensive medical and non-medical support, our Active Health Solutions at-home physical therapy services specialize in rehabilitation care, focusing on restoring function, reducing pain, and improving overall well-being!

This duration allows for a thorough assessment, personalized treatment, and ongoing evaluation of your progress.

When will I notice pain relief?
Experiencing pain relief is often a top priority for individuals undergoing physical therapy. While the timeline for pain relief varies from person to person, a well-structured therapy plan can help expedite the process and promote lasting results. Several factors contribute to your progress, including the nature of your condition, the extent of the injury, and your commitment to the rehabilitation process.
To optimize your pain relief journey and maximize the benefits of physical therapy, consider the following guidelines:
- Communicate openly with your therapist: Share your pain levels, limitations, and goals with your therapist, enabling them to tailor your treatment plan and focus on targeted techniques that address your needs.
- Consistency is key: Adhere to your therapy schedule and actively participate in all recommended sessions to ensure steady progress and experience noticeable pain relief more quickly.
- Engage in prescribed exercises: Perform prescribed home exercises and stretches consistently. These activities complement your in-person therapy sessions and contribute to your overall recovery.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Incorporate a balanced diet, proper hydration, and adequate rest into your daily routine to support your body’s natural healing process and enhance the effectiveness of your therapy.
- Set realistic expectations: Understand that pain relief is a gradual process requiring time, patience, and persistence. Celebrate small improvements and focus on your long-term goals, remembering that each individual’s healing journey is unique.
By following these guidelines and working closely with our physical therapist, you can experience noticeable pain relief and improved quality of life. Embrace the opportunity to invest in your health and well-being and trust in the transformative power of expert physical therapy care.
Will my insurance cover in-home physical therapy?
Navigating the intricacies of insurance coverage can be daunting, and we’re here to help you with that process. At Active Health Solutions, we believe in full price transparency and will never surprise bill our patients.
- Consider the benefits of an out-of-network provider: As an out-of-network provider, we are enabled to see our patients for a full, hour-long one-on-one session without the strict demands of an insurance company. This allows our expert physical therapists to treat our patients as they have been trained, not according to an in-network contract. We have seen that patients typically require fewer and less frequent visits when treated by our in-home expert therapists.
- Review your insurance policy: Start by examining your insurance policy documents regarding out-of-network benefits, which should detail the scope of your coverage. Typically you will have an out-of-network deductible which is the amount that needs to be met before your coinsurance kicks in. At that time, your insurance company covers a certain percentage (your coinsurance) of the allowed amount per each service code. With plan questions, contact your insurance company’s customer service hotline or online portal for further clarification and to confirm your benefits.
- Obtain a physician referral (rarely required): While uncommon, some insurance plans may necessitate a referral or prescription from your primary care physician to cover physical therapy services. Check with your insurance provider and obtain the necessary documentation if needed.
- Submit superbill for reimbursement: After each session, we will provide you with a superbill which is a medical receipt that includes the necessary codes and license numbers for insurance reimbursement. Almost all commercial carriers have online portals for submission. Once reviewed, your insurance company will send you a check for direct reimbursement. We never receive reimbursement from your insurance company so all of the payment goes to you.
- Medicare consideration: At this time, we have no relationship with Medicare and therefore are unable to provide superbills to patients for reimbursement. We are happy to help you find someone who accepts Medicare to ensure you receive high quality care.
By taking these proactive steps, you can confidently and clearly understand any associated costs. Consider the following to help offset the costs of your therapy:
Utilize Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs): If you have an HSA or FSA, you can use these funds to cover the costs of your at-home physical therapy visits.
Even if your insurance doesn’t cover the full cost, you can still request an appointment to learn about your options.
